Duisburg

Most of last week the sun graced us with her presence and for a moment there i was certain that Summer was truly on its way. As for this week, i've barely seen my own shadow and it's down to a nippy 12 degrees.

Somehow i lost track of time and before i knew it a week's gone by since my last post. How rude and inconsistent of me. My apologies for being lazy the past week. Even my motivation to surf online was down to about zero.

I blame being sick. I blame the damn weather!

Oh i don't know. Maybe it's just here. Or it's just me. I have this love-hate relationship with living here. And the past couple of days, i'm questioning my love for it. Don't get me wrong, everything is fine. J and i are perfectly fine. In fact, our relationship couldn't be any better. I'm just having my moment and wishing i lived in an English speaking country that's all. Bleh. Whatever.

Anyway, i have more photos from the day after but in case i don't do anything tonight and have nothing to write about, at least i'll have something to regurgitate.

So anyway, before i get distracted and end up not posting this, here are some photos from last weekend.

Proof that the sky was blue and the sun was blinding. Maybe, just maybe Summer may be around the corner.

The question was how long would it last? So we decided to drive to Duisburg, which is one of Düsseldorf's neighboring cities and took all of 20 minutes to get there. The weather remained to be beautiful and so we found ourselves at an ice-cream shop which sold over 100 ice-cream combinations/variations.

Seriously, there was so much to choose from, i could feel a panic coming on.

We decided to share the sour cherry with 3 hearty scoop-fulls of Statticella ice-cream and washed it down with a banana milkshake. I'm not much of a sweet tooth or an ice-cream fan but OMFG... YUM!

After indulging in ice-cream for lunch we decided to walk down to the centre where all the shops were. And came to the conclusion that they basically have the same range of stores similar to those in Düsseldorf. Only differences are there's no traffic or streets cutting through.

There was this random piece of grass oppossite these fountains, so we took a moment to enjoy the sun. It's amazing what a bit of sunshine can do to ones' mood levels.

It must have been the weather because we passed by another ice-cream store and i couldn't help but want to try their Gelato too.

I guess every city has a landmark and i can only assume Duisberg's landmark is that superhero looking blue bird with a woman attached to its chest like a backpack but for its front. Not sure what the story behind that is but she has perky butt cheeks.

Not too far away was the Sechs-Seen-Platte, which basically means 'Six Lakes'. Once could sail, lounge at the man-made beaches, have a BBQ, row ones boat or just walk around in the forests. However there's an article that says there's actually only five lakes [source]. Well whatever the number is, it's pretty impressive.

We found one little stream that made its' way out to the lake where one could use the stepping stones to get across.

This was the view looking up the stream into the forest:

And the picture above is the view looking down the stream out to where the lake was.

And here's J looking a little like Robin Hood minus the tights.

But seriously, i'm surprised how clean the place was. If this was anywhere in Asia, one would surely find a styrofoam container or plastic bag tangled up in the weeds. But there was barely any rubbish lying around and if there was, they were neatly placed in the various bins plotted around. I contemplated putting my feet in the water but i didn't have anything to dry them with and there was all these weird prickles on the floor, i decided not to in the end.

We saw some guys trying their hand at fishing. I'm not sure what they were looking for but they seem well equipped and knew exactly what they were looking for.

Up near the walk way you could see wild strawberries growing. Nature's red polka dots decorating the floor, i couldn't help but try one. My only tip is to make sure you get the ones right at he back away from the sidewalk, you never know if it got a canine golden shower.

No, it did not taste like pee. It was slightly sour but still edible.

J found these plants that were extra sticky and thought it would be funny to attach them to me. Natures' own darts! You could throw them on the back of someone and aim for a bullseye. It was so cool, these plants basically stayed put where ever you threw them.

Once we were done with walking around, we had this urge to eat asparagus. Apparently it's the season and there's a farm up the road where you can get them fresh. So we headed in that direction but i guess we were so occupied at the lake that we got there too late and they were closed. So we stopped by the nearby restaurant and asked if they prepared asparagus.

The restaurant had a small marquee outside where they layed out chairs and tables. We ordered a round of beers and waited patiently for our food. J ordered a Carlsberg and i have to admit, it tasted strange. All these years i've been drinking it but since moving to this side of the world, i have not once ordered a Carlsberg. But then again, there are heaps more yummy beers to choose from.

I ordered half a pound of white asparagus with Hollandaise sauce and J got the Crêpes with asparagus. We each got half and i couldn't wait to inhale my food. After all i only ate ice-cream for lunch. But i have to say, it was well worth the wait cause it tasted damn good.

Now i'm hungry.

I know right!? I'm sure there's some kind of history to it that dates back to god knows when OR maybe the city council were into super heroes and was trying to be arty farty. Hmmm.

So many questions and so very little answers... *shrugs*

As for the the stream photo... i fully blame the sunshine for the uplifted mood. But thanks ;)
