Date Night - Oh What a Night!

So my second date with the Kazakhstanian Blond Chick a.k.a German Grammar Nazi was canceled last Friday. When we met, she insisted that i only speak in German to her and she would speak in English. Which is fine, if she didn't mind me making mistakes every other sentence and her sounding a little frustrated.

But then when i received a SMS from her three hours before i was meant to meet up with her, saying that she was sick and asking we can meet some other time. I was almost relieved that our meeting didn't take place. I figured since she wrote her SMS in German, that immediately gave me permission to write back to her in English.

And because i don't have the guts to tell her that i think she's an overbearing Grammar Nazi that needs to loosen up, i told her that i was very busy with work [which is true] and if she wants to write back to me she can do so on the website that we both had signed up on.

I haven't received a message from her since.

***

But that's not what i really wanted to write about. That night J and i went out on a date. It had been ages since we went out on a Friday night, so we were both excited to indulge in a few drinks and see what Cologne had to offer.

Our original plan was to eat at some restaurant that one of his colleagues had recommended but upon arrival, the place was packed. And the thought of waiting for a table did not cross our minds, so we kept walking hoping that we'd find somewhere else.

And ended up at an authentic Thai restaurant called Halima Thogsi, which also had a framed picture of the King and Queen of Thailand above the doorway. I ended up ordering the Tofu and Vegetable Green Curry which was a bit spicy but was very tasty. J had a sweet and sour crispy duck which he said was really good too.

For dessert i ordered some sticky rice thinking it was going to be served cold and with some mango. But it turned out to be sticky rice wrapped in a banana leaf which was steamed with black beans and some sort of banana inside. It didn't taste so good though, so i only ate the rice.

Then just around the corner from where we were eating was Die Wohngemeinschaft - the bar that was set up to look like the interior of an apartment. And because it was a smoking club, patrons were asked to fill in their details and sign a form before entering. And in exchange we got a Smoking Club Identity Card.

The place was completely packed when we arrived but somehow managed to find two seats by the bar. It was a lot smaller than i had thought it was going to be We ordered our drinks and two tequila shots. When we ordered our second round of tequila shots, the waiter forgot to bring it. But when he remembered, he apologised and said they were on the house and we didn't have to pay, which i thought was very nice.

We then decided we wanted to see if there were any bars nearby that weren't so packed.

And after walking to the end of another street and cursing my high heels because my feet hurt so much, we eventually found a club called, "Einundfünfzig drink & b'eat" which basically translates into English as "51 drink & b'eat" - A place where one can drink, listen to beats and eat.

There was no cover charge but upon entering we see this beefed up guy and his waxed chest dancing on the bar counter.

We weren't sure if it was a lesbian bar since majority of the people in their were women and the waitress kept staring over me and giving little flirty smiles. Or it was some special night [which i then later found out was Ladies Night].

We stayed long enough for a vodka redbull, another shot of tequila and a lucky draw - which my number didn't get called out and so i didn't end up winning anything.

And to top the night off, we found ourselves at Stardust. A club better known for American table top dancing.

Yup, i went to a strip joint.

Before we went in though, J asked the bouncer if it was OK if women were allowed. Apparently, there are some strip joints that are strictly for men. But the guy supposedly, said that women are welcome and so are couples.

The ticket stubs weren't anything special. I'm guessing it's for the benefit of those who don't want others to know where they've been all night. It only cost 10 Euro to get in but drinks cost nearly twice as much than what you would find in an ordinary bar. For example a redbull vodka would set you back about 7 Euro and a simple beer would cost just as much.

Obviously, photos weren't allowed so i can only give you a short description of what i saw.

Let's just say for the rest of the evening i got to see women dance provocatively around a stripper pole. Some could work the pole better than others and others just bent over a lot and shook their booties. Some wore smiles on their faces, others looked really uninterested and one even had an expression that looked like she was in some far away place.

I observed men of all ages stuff fake dollar notes in their mouths, whilst the women squished their boobs together to grab the notes out of their mouths. One Euro was equivalent to one fake dollar bill.

Some men wore wedding rings and some wore business suits. Some looked like puberty just hit and then there were some who looked like they were regulars. Some looked excited each time their favorite stripper came out whilst others made crude comments and laughed.

A few had private lap dances in cubicles that could rotate to face the other side and some invited some of the girls to drink their champagne with them.

At one point during the night, i saw one of the strippers hiding in the bathroom stuffing her face with chocolate whilst i waited to go to the loo. She was on the phone with somebody and talking in a language i couldn't comprehend. I smiled at her and said hello before disappearing into the toilet cubicle.

Overall, i had a really good time despite not being directly involved in any of the activities. In fact, my perception of the place was it wasn't sleazy at all. I felt safe knowing that there were tonnes of bouncers every where keeping an eye out for drunk customers and any misbehavior.

But i couldn't help but think each time one of the girls would smile or wink at me, they weren't doing it because they liked me but because they were trying to lure me in so i could spend my money. But i wondered, how easy or how confident must one be to get men to hand over their fake dollar bills?

I guess at the end of the day everybody has to make a living someway or another.

Alcohol flavored Easter Flames

I'm not a chocolate fan but i can't resist a Kinder Überraschung a.k.a Kinder Surprise once and awhile.

Did you know? Kinder [pronounced Kin-duh] means "Children" in German.

Monday was a public holiday, all thanks to Easter. And on Sunday we were told there was going to be a massive bonfire just up the road. And true enough the day before we saw the drink wagons being set up and a stack of neatly piled up branches and dead leaves. We don't exactly live in the countryside but there are a few small fields around and about. And this particular patch is right beside a residential area and elementary school.

Anyway, the Easter-bonfire signified the end of Winter and "the light from the fire symbolically represents the driving-out of Winter and the coming warmth." Or as the Christians would like to believe "it is a sign of the resurrection of Christ" [source].

It started at 7pm but we figured we'd wait till it got dark and for the flames to settle before we made our way there. By the time we got there it was around 8:30pm and it had been drizzling most of the day.

From afar you could only see silhouettes hovering around what looked like a massive explosion.

The closer i got i could feel the heat caress my face. And then as i was inches away from the fire, i couldn't help but think what would happen if someone set themselves on fire? Obviously not on purpose. But where were the fire brigade and ambulances? Wasn't there anybody going to barricade the sight?

The flames were hypnotizing. Every so often the wind direction would change and you could see the crowd rotate around the bonfire to avoid being engulfed by a thick cloud of smoke.

And as i followed the sparks dance in the wind, i watched some land on a few innocent bystanders.
.
.
.
But to no avail, nobody was set alight.

But i couldn't believe how close some kids got. I watched one kid prod the burning flames with a stray twig. Teasing it and later stabbing it with much excitement. And i couldn't help but wonder, where were his parents? Do they know he's playing with fire?

And so as the kids played with fire, the adults and the underage hovered around the drink wagons like moths to a flame.

To kill Time we figured we'd have a few shots and chased them with beer that cost 1,10€. The first shot tasted like a mild version of Sambuca with its' Aniseed flavor - not my favorite.

Then there was the Grashüpfer - i can't remember what it tastes like now except that i know it was green.

And probably my favorite out of the lot was Feigling which translates to "Coward" in English. It's quite popular apparently and can be bought at practically every supermarket or kiosk. It has a slight peach aftertaste and goes down quite easily. Definitely a girls' shot.

And last but not least, a rather strong pear-tasting liquor with a small piece of pear inside in a ready prepared pack.

We didn't stay until the fire burnt out because the sky started to spit again and the temperature dropped. But i have to say, i was quite impressed even though they said last years' turnout was apparently much more impressive. I blame Mother Nature.

Gawd, i'm so happy that Winter is finally over. I'm just not looking forward to the sweats!

Oh and i don't know why but the other day i found this real-sized stuffed chicken surrounded by stacked egg cartons quite disturbing.

I don't really celebrate Easter but for those who did, Happy Easter!

Juggling ain't easy.

The doctor called me last week to tell me that i had to come in yesterday so they could do yet another blood test. My last test was taken on the 11th of January [9 days after my operation] and my results showed that my HCG levels [a hormone produced during pregnancy] was in the 500 range. Prior to the operation i measured over 21,000, so if you were to compare it, my last test results were not that high.

As a safety measure they have to continue taking my blood until the results reach zero. That way they are sure that there is no embryo tissue left in the body - sounds gross i know.

And if i don't hear from my doctor soon, i should assume my results are normal and i don't need to return until 3 months time when i have to do a full examination. But if she does call, well that just simply means i have to whip out my arm and they get to suck more of my blood out.

But overall, i'm doing well. In fact, i've been quite busy.

Last weekend J and i were invited to his colleagues' place for drinks.

The Chef + The Stylist + The Boss.

Him and his girlfriend organised a get-together with another couple for a night of home-made Mexican food, Beers, Margaritas, Mojitos and of course Gold Tequila matched with cinnamon dusted orange slices.

Tequila!

Good thing i had my camera cause after a few drinks, one too many shots and a round or two of Halli Gelli [a kid's game involving a bell and matching fruits that must add up to "five"] i can't really remember that much. It definitely was a case of blind drunkenness. The aim of the game was to get as many cards and to see how fast your reflexes were.

The Hostess

I have no idea what is going on at this point but it's obvious i'm still functioning. Alcohol makes people do strange things. And after a couple of drinks and countless shots, segments of my night have gone astray.

But going by the photos i took, everyone was smiling so i can only assume everyone got along. And i have to say, i had a good time although the hangover wasn't all that nice.

Anyway, i'm hoping by next week i can concentrate fully on work. Because for the past week i've been so preoccupied with doing homework and housework, that by the time that i want to sink my teeth into work, i can barely keep my eyes open.

I can't seem to juggle everything at the same time without getting extremely cranky. But i'm taking deep breaths and making sure my head stays above the water.

Oh and if i haven't mentioned it yet, i think the weather is absolutely nuts. It took a few days for all the snow to melt [again] and then yesterday the snow started up again! I'm looking outside and the streets are completely covered.

Today is supposed to be about -5 degrees Celsius which will mean any melted snow that tried to escape is now frozen and the ground is super icy - a bitch for cars without Winter wheels and those pedestrians with no grip to their shoes.

Hello Summer, where are you?

To mingle. I remember how to do that!

Last Friday two of my classmates held a small party at their home. They invited a few of us to their place for some food, drinks and a chance to mingle. Even our teacher came along, which i thought was really nice. There are all sorts of Nationalities in my class. If i'm not mistaken there's two from Tehran, Tunisia, Venezuela, Poland, Russia, Kazakhstan, Iraq, France and Bosnia.

Not wanting to get lost, i decided to meet up with 2 of my other classmates so we could take the train to our friends place together. By bus it would take 15 minutes but by train it took only 3 minutes.

In the middle is Welga [pronounced Vel-ga], she's a nurse and with a bit of alcohol she's a slightly hyperactive. Great fun to be around. And then there is Sona on the right, i think she's a house wife. Both are from Russia and very caring.

We arrived at 3:30pm and my gawd it was cold. I'm guessing it was just before the weekends' temperature drop, it was about 3 degrees Celcius.

I'm not too sure whether my German was completely correct but somehow i managed. Most of the time we were laughing about something or about what someone had said earlier in class. Of course not laughing "at" them but more like "with" others. Some of them already knew one another when the course began 3 months back. So as the outsider coming in and "joining" them, i felt very welcomed.

The blond woman wearing all black is my teacher.

Although there was a bit of bitching and moaning about certain individuals, overall everyone seemed to have gotten along and bonded.

In fact, i actually had a really good time.

Of course the couple of glasses of strawberry flavored sparkling wine, Rosé wine and a Martini rosso to wash it all down helped in gathering my nerves. I admit a great way to fool myself into thinking my German was flawless.

Anaiz is from Venezuela and plays the "Quatro" - a guitar-like instrument which only has 4 strings. She's a funny gal. Loud and full of life. She has a thick accent that shows through when she tries to speak German.

And this is Layla and myself.

I think she was the first person who spoke to me when i came to class. Her and i are usually the first ones out of class to have a cigarette when we have a break. Even when it's 0 degrees and our hands are practically frozen, we'll be outside chit-chatting about something. She speaks a bit of English but 99% of the time we speak German together. The other 1% is in English because we don't know what that word is in German.

I've still got a long way more to learn...

J came and picked me up after he went for drinks with some of his colleagues. His chance to get to know a few of his colleagues and vice-versa. He's been having issues at work with his co-workers. Apparently nobody likes him and they've been talking all sorts of shit behind his back. He knows this because they tell him. Even his boss told him it's true! Isn't that crazy!?

People have been making up all sorts of rumors and claiming that he doesn't do any work. When clearly he's one of the first to arrive at 7am and is usually one of the last to leave the office. Why? Because he's helping some other person do their work. And if other departments needed help at an event, he was more than happy to help out and stay back late. In fact, i haven't even spent that much time with him because he's been working so much.

It doesn't help that he's quite young for the position he's in and he looks young. It seems like people don't like to take instructions/directions from someone who looks like they've just finished high school. By the way J turns 30 in 3 weeks.

I can only hope the new year brings better luck for him and life at work gets better. Otherwise who knows, we may just end up moving somewhere else.

Anyway, we stuck around Layla's and Bardia's place a little longer before we drove back to the Irish pub. J had promised he'd come back to the pub since they said they might need help serving the 3-course dinner. But by the time we got there, dessert had been served.

So instead we stuck around for a few more beers and chatted [in English] with one of the Chefs that works with J. An American ex-Marine. Friendly guy who plays rugby and speaks direct. The kind of person who i can assume will say it how it is and not sugar coat things.

As they say, The key to good mingling and meeting new people is to show interest in them. Smile, be enthusiastic and maintain a positive attitude. No one wants to be around a negative person that complains about others or life in general... [source]

May long weekend

German classes this past week has been anything but easy. I've been rather nerd-ish and have been trying to memorise as many Verbs. But it's NOT working! And just when i'm starting to understand something, each day something new is thrown my way. We're nearly at the end of Section 7 and it so happens to be the last chapter of the book.

I'm still trying to get my head around the first half and i'm sure it's not going to get any easier. So yes, THAT is my bitch for the moment! Ich verstehe nicht!

But i can't really complain since i already knew it was going to be hard. BUT one thing i am happy about is the weather. It's currently resting around the 24˙C mark. The past week has been absolutely beautiful with the clearest of clear blue and cloudless skies!

Finally, i foresee my pastiness seeing the light of day and soon, i will have my tan back.

The 1st of May was a public holiday and it so happened to land on Thursday so J took Friday off to spend the long weekend with Boobers and i. I, on the other hand had to go to class on Friday but all i could think about was knockin' back a beer and enjoying the holiday. I cooked dinner for the three of us and it even included a homemade Caesar salad dressing inclusive of the raw egg yolk. And i must say, it tasted quite good. Don't worry, nobody got food poisoning. We washed it all down with white white and champagne courtesy of J.

Then on Saturday J, M and i ventured out to watch the Fireworks display along the Rhein in Bonn, "Rhein in Flammen". They estimated about 350,000 people and people of all ages came out of nowhere to watch it and i think that's only in Bonn. In Köln it's something like 400,000! It's insane. The lake was littered with youngsters and people busted out with their BBQ grills and what seemed like an endless supply of beers. But the fireworks was absolutely stunning, it seemed to go on for ages.

...Once a year, "The Rhine in Flames along the Siebengebirge” (Rhein in Flammen am Siebengebirge) is organised between Linz and Bonn. The river banks and numerous landmarks and sights are bathed in magic colours. Along the Rhine promenades of Linz, Remagen, Rheinbreitbach, Unkel, Bad Honnef, Königswinter, Niederdollendorf and Bonn, 2,000 red Bengal lights and five fireworks add an incomparable ambience to the Rhine Valley that night... Once again, i forgot that i had a recording feature on my Lumix. So i've shamelessly stolen the Fireworks Finale from someone else. Danke Schön! Watching it in motion with the Opera music in the background was simply amazing. What a great night it was.
