There's more to just Breathing.

Yesterday evening i did the unthinkable and did something totally random. I agreed to attend a Qigong class [pronounced Chi Kung] with J. Originally skeptical and worried that there would be physical contact involved, i of course hesitated.

I'm still not in top shape and the last thing i need is to injure myself. And although i know there's a lot of health benefits from being more active, more than often i choose the couch potato route.

I was also concerned that my German was not good enough to understand the instructor. It's all good and dandy if i can learn how to breathe properly but if i'm given instructions in German to visualize things so i can channel my Chi but i don't know what is actually being said, it kinda defeats the purpose and makes the whole experience rather stressful.

So two hours before the class was to begin, J and i were googling and watching videos on Qigong and Chi on YouTube.

Intrigued by the power of Chi, i still managed to pull out every excuse not to go. And like many other times blatantly said, "I don't want to" without even giving a reason for my "disinterest".

But as J continued to persuade me with his puppy-dog-sad-eyes so i would change my mind, i eventually gave in.

After all, i didn't want my lack of involvement and motivation be another reason for us to argue. Plus it would mean we could spend more time together since last week J tried out Kung Fu and liked it. And that would mean twice a week he would be gone for the training all evening and would be home by the time i was getting ready for bed. He also had intentions of going to Qigong on two extra days of the week, so that would definitely mean less time together and more strain on our relationship.

...

The class is held at a Sports Academy which focuses on Kung Fu, Tae Won Do, Thai Boxing and Qigong classes. Located in a neighboring city about 25 minutes away, we realise if we are serious about this, there needs to be commitment and a regular schedule.

So anyway the instructor was kind enough to throw in a few English words to help in the visualization part for my benefit of course but for most parts of it i stitched together what i understood and kept my eyes open so i could just mimic what she was doing.

However there were times when she didn't translate the important words and i found myself rummaging through my brain trying to figure out what object or animal she wanted the group to visualize. And later i found out from J i had in fact pictured something totally different.

Oh well.

At the end of the class i was feeling quite relaxed and good. It must have been all that oxygen!

By the time we got back home it was 11pm and it was way past our bedtime. I'm usually passed out by then but last night my mind was active and found it difficult to sleep. I woke up feeling unrested and by the time it was 5am, my body was urging me to get up. I read that it could be because the activities i engaged in were too stimulating [source].

So in an act to improve our relationship and more importantly ourselves, we're trying out Qigong and seeing where it takes us. It's not like we have anything to lose and anyway, it's not like we've got much of a social life.

So as J simply put it, why not?

...

I managed to stumble upon this amazing site that explains in detail the health benefits of Qigong and i've taken the liberty to list the points below. Here is the link for those of you who are interested.

Benefits of practicing Qigong [Chi kung];
  • It's an excellent way to keep fit.
  • It is also a good way to lose weight.
  • Very relaxing.
  • Qigong heals both the practitioner and the person to whom the healing is directed.
  • It encourages long-term health and longevity,
  • It builds invigorating energy.
  • It gives an overall sense of well-being.
  • It helps improve coordination and balance.
  • Helps build confidence and self-esteem.
  • Teaches pain management.
  • It balances right- and left-hemispheric brain activity.

The site even describes the Basic Qigong Yogic Breathing exercise [click] and is similar to one of the exercises we did in class yesterday. Basically it follows the principles of all diaphragmatic breathing techniques and was actually harder than i thought.

"Most people take quick shallow breaths when they breathe. When they breathe from the top half of their chest they are actually wasting more than half of their lung capacity."

Apparently not only will you feel more relaxed, but it claims to promote mental clarity, better concentration, a stronger immune system and longevity.

Cold turkey but not quite.

I'm proud to say that i've survived not having a cigarette for 10 days. But i have one piece of nicotine laced gum left and i'm trying to see how long i can go without it. I'm trying to rearrange my lifestyle which i'm hoping will allow me to improve and eventually save money. [Not sure how that's working but if there's a will, there's a way].

Uh oh
.
.
.
I can feel myself eye-ing my emergency sticks BUT don't worry, i also find myself turning elsewhere.

Bonus is, i find myself carrying less items nowadays, only problem is i constantly feel as if i've left something behind. And spend ages worrying that i've misplaced something. Yes i know that's why there's handbags but sometimes, carrying a bag is such a pain in the arse.

As for the cravings, well they're still there and i've noticed a slight dip in my concentration. But then again with the additional factors playing a vital role, no wonder i'm distracted. I'm not quite agitated but i do find myself in need to be doing something to keep me occupied. There are no serious mood swings. [Yay for those around me]. However, i have noticed a slight dull headache but i think dehydration could be the culprit and a missed dosage.

So yea... so far so good. *thinks happy thoughts*

My only worry is the upcoming R5 over the weekend. It's almost second nature to my existence to suck down a beer and have a lit cigarette held between my index and middle finger.

I. MUST. CONQUER. THIS. ADDICTION + I MUST NOT THINK TOO MUCH!

NOTE TO ONESELF: MUST remember to pack a shit load of gum and chupa chups.

*Thinking Happy Thoughts*

Courtesy of Sound Oasis

Apparently last week's yoga class was concentrating on the solar plexus [which is the stomach region] and NOT the heart. So all that time i was directing energy to the wrong chakra... ALL THANKS TO EKAMON! Oh well... ehehehe.

Today's class was focusing on the heart and after a long day in the office, it was nice to end it on a happy note. I sent my LOVE to those who matter and visualised sending positive vibes all around.

And although i'm super tired now, here's me thinking happy thoughts and believing that ANYTHING is possible if you put your mind to it and BELIEVE in it.

Oh and by the way, to update you all on my quit smoking mission... it's been 5 days since i had my last cigarette.

*smiles*

3-in-1

THURSDAY: I decided to try out Yoga. The last time i enrolled in any kind of fitness class was over 4 years and i was in Melbourne. And once i started work, my erratic time table and never ending deadlines meant it was nearly impossible to get to the classes on time.

Plus with events to attend to and promote for every other weekend only meant late nights, excessive alcohol abuse and no stamina to do anything energetic.

But times are changing...

FRIDAY: Every week the yoga class focuses on revitalizing and bringing energy to a particular chakra. Yesterday so happened to be the HEART. I woke up this morning with a few muscle aches. Who would have thought just a few stretches and breathing exercises could do so much. I'm actually surprised i was still able to touch my toes after so long!

I later spent part of the day with AnBloodyMumNoMore and SashaPau at Marmalade and met up with Ekamon after. After which it led me back into the office to do some last minute changes for a deadline.

But because of a recent rat invasion i was forced to inhale dried squid pieces whilst i did my work. I so happen to be sitting beneath the air-conditioner which apparently is the base where the rat comes in. Mmmm... lucky me!

And because it's a long weekend the Pest Control people have decided to only tackle our rat invasion AFTER the holidays. So there i was nicely doing my work and i hear the papers behind me squeeking! I think it's my imagination until i see a rat the size of 2-medium-sized fists run along the window ledge and tuck itself behind the bean bags. YES the very bean bags i often find myself taking short naps on!

I rang Ekamon and she came to the office. Armed with a long stick and broom, our mission was to uncover the rat. I tried my best to hurry up my work but couldn't help think about our office Rat/s.

I guess they/he'll be spending his holidays indoors. Hopefully by the time we all get back he hasn't made an nest under my table! Or has died in the trap from starvation!

12 OCT 2007: But to end this post, i'd like to send a hearty birthday wish to my mate, Supastar Didi aka DIDJITAL! May all your wishes come true and may this year bring you lots of laughter and smiles.

From the Outside Looking In.

I had no expectations stepping into Samkkya Wellness Centre and the entire rejuvenation treatment took about 3 hours. In total, i was there for nearly 5 hours!

It started with a foot soak and then a head and shoulder massage. But little did i know that i was going to be heavily slathered with oils by 2 women and lying practically spread eagle in what looked like an over sized disposable dark blue paper g-string!

I had so much oil rubbed into my skin, i felt like i was ready to participate in a girly wrestling match.

In fact, the sensation of having 2 pairs of hands working on me is very different from a conventional pair. I kept my eyes closed and tried to follow the rhythm of the movements as both were in sync with one another but my mind constantly darted as their hands ran up and down my body.

A matter of fact, it was rather sensual but the crinkling of their plastic aprons was a distraction and my head was soon filled with all sorts of nonsense. Stupid thoughts such as whether having a threesome was anything similar to the sensation. Obviously there was NOTHING sexual going on but the act of being at complete mercy was an experience.

So once that was done they busted out with these poultice [exactly what the image on the flyer shows in the previous post]. Filled with herbs and drenched with a concoction of oils they continued to lightly pound them on my body as if i were a piece of garlic and then ran them up and down my body as if they were trying to iron out my muscles.

The next treatment was dripping 2 litres of oil across my forehead. This was to to relax and used to open ones' 3rd eye. If anything this was what pushed me to relaxation mode and i was soon guided to another room where i sat in this cocoon like box filled with steam. I felt like a steamed dim sum and as it grew hotter inside the cocoon, i started sweating bullets.

The room that i was put in had an adjoining bathroom, which i was able to wash off as much of the oils as possible but even after 2 showers, i can still smell a faint scent lingering.

...

By the end of it i was well marinated and i was asked whether i wanted to get an Iridology reading. So i thought why not?

He asked various questions and went through my medical history. The more he explained, the more i found it fascinating. He showed me an iris that was healthy and one that wasn't. When i saw the unhealthy one, i got goose bumps... it was nasty! "It can reveal the body constitution, inherent strengths and weaknesses, health levels and transitions that take place in a person’s body according to their way of life."

[Chrissie's Insides Viewed from the Outside]

Overall, i'm relatively healthy although i'm NOT entirely perfect. There are signs that need improvement and according to the reading my Nervous + Digestive System [in particular, my brain] plus my Muscles & Joints need to be improved, [it even shows that my back is weak and it has issues. See i wasn't exaggerating!]

According to the doctor, there are ways of reversing the damage but should i continue with my current lifestyle and habits, it will get worse. Duh!? After my results were recorded, the Naturopath informed me that i should speak with the onsite Ayurveda doctor. My day of pampering ended up more like a consultation but then again it was an eye opener [no pun intended].

SUGGESTIONS MADE:
Take up yoga or start exercising/breathing techniques. Speak to a counsellor/therapist. Do things that make me happy, even the smallest things.

He then mapped out a treatment plan, should i be interested but i'm not sure whether i'll go down that path... yet. And when asked how long it would take for the changes to show up in my iris, should i change my habits, he said about 2 months. Cool huh?

Time to be marinated!

As part of an agreed barter, i am heading off to get pampered for the afternoon!

I'm expecting to be well marinated to the pulp and smelling of all sorts of spices and oils when i'm done. Hopefully it'll help diminish all the kinks and muscular issues i've been having lately with my back and neck.

OoooOooer...
