Just One Can Make All The Difference.
IKEA's marketing ploy to brainwash their customers to think they're getting a good deal. Funny how one cent can make all the difference between another purchase and being ignored.

Ten logo design tips.
1. A logo doesn’t need to say what a company does
Restaurant logos don’t need to show food, dentist logos don’t need to show teeth, furniture store logos don’t need to show furniture. Just because it’s relevant, doesn’t mean you can’t do better. The Mercedes logo isn’t a car. The Virgin Atlantic logo isn’t an aeroplane. The Apple logo isn’t a computer. Etc. Etc.
2. Not every logo needs a mark
Sometimes a client just needs a professional logotype to identify their business. Don’t be afraid to ask what they think.3. Two-way process
Remember, things might not always pan out as you hope. Your client might request something you disagree with. If that happens, try giving them what they want, then show them what you believe is an improvement, and why. They’re less likely to be so resistant if they already see how their thoughts pan out.4. Picasso started somewhere
You don’t need to be an artist to realise the benefits of logo sketching. Ideas can flow much faster between a pen and paper than they can a mouse and monitor.5. Under-promise, over-deliver
If you’re unsure how long a task will take to complete, estimate longer. Design projects are like construction work — you piece lots of little elements together to form a greater whole, and setbacks can crop up at any time.6. Leave trends to the fashion industry
Trends come and go, and when you’re talking about changing a pair of jeans, or buying a new dress, that’s fine, but where your brand identity is concerned, longevity is key.Don’t follow the pack.
Stand out.
7. Work in black first
By leaving colour to the end of the process, you focus on the idea. No amount of gradient or colour will rescue a poorly designed mark.8. Keep it appropriate
Designing for a lawyer? Ditch the fun approach. Designing for a kid’s TV show? Nothing too serious. I could go on, but you get the picture.9. A simple logo aids recognition
Keeping the design simple allows for flexibility in size. Ideally, your design should work at a minimum of around one inch without loss of detail. Look at the logos of large corporations like Mitsubishi, Samsung, FedEx, BBC etc. Their logos look simple and are easier to recognise because of it.10. One thing to remember
That’s it. Leave your client with just one thing to remember about the design. All strong logos have one single feature to help them stand out.Not two, three, or four.
One.

The Price I Pay for Vanity.
After a wash, you can see the ends aren't looking too healthy and my hair colour is a dull blackish brown...
Here i am getting ready for the Boss to trim my ends. In order for him to cut it precise it's easier if i stand up. So there i stood as still as a statue as he cut each section with absolute concentration.
It's apparently a sin to try and cut ones' own fringe or as the Germans would say "Pony". Yes, i am guilty of cutting it myself because i am a cheapskate. But i am still convinced with enough practice and determination one can get a decent result.
The side swept fringe is the most common in hairstyles but the Boss recommended that my fringe be cut straight across with the sides tapered in [as i had previously had it]. Reason being that if he would remove the hair that would frame my face, it would visually broaden it - something i obviously didn't want. According to him, the contrast between my overall length and my fringe is rare here and such a style would definitely suit me.
And when he was done, it was like magic, it instantly made my face thinner.
Although it didn't really help that they had really yummy biscuits and candy accompanying their endless supply of complimentary coffee.
Here is the Boss and his Apprentice trying to find a suitable base colour that would blend well with my natural hair colour.
The Apprentice and one of the stylists testing out the colours on samples of my cut hair. Their uncertainty was based on the fact that when i was in Malaysia i would frequently colour my hair and apparently products in Asia and in Europe have different chemical ingredients. Something to do with one region having a metallic base. And when combined, the results can be disastrous.
So knowing that, i had no issues with waiting for half an hour for the results.
After applying a dark brown colour base, i waited again for the Boss to finish doing some other customers' hair. It took about an hour for the highlights to be put in.
Here i am trying to read and not looking excited about Life. Lucky for me the Apprentice could speak fluent English, so it made the Time pass relatively fast and it wasn't so boring. Then the other senior stylist took over to apply the chocolate brown colour to the rest of my hair and that took another half an hour so.
And then after washing, drying and all that jazz...
Finally the finished look; a chocolaty brown base and reddish/pink highlights throughout except for the fringe.
It's a lot more in-yo-face than i had anticipated and the added attention has made me slightly more self-conscious. But overall, i'm quite happy with the results even though the whole process took six bloody hours.
...
And going by my Timezone, i have about 3 hours and 50 minutes left until i reach my ripe ol' age of 30 and i can finally open my birthday presents!

Waving to the Money Gods.
Anyone who's been in the same position knows, it seriously sucks to be broke.
Bills will always have to be paid and food will most definitely need to be put on the table.
Simple luxuries like fresh bread that we'd usually buy for 2€ were replaced by a supermarket brand a quarter of the price. I'm not a snob. I just like bread. It's times like these, that it's definitely worth being a non-meat eater because grocery bills are reduced by a third, if not more.
Last year i managed to work on a corporate identity manual which helped pay for many luxuries and our every day life. Although our move to a new city, didn't really help in our expenditures. Money has a tendency to come and go and before i knew it my worries were back.
Since coming to Germany, i've learned to appreciate what little disposable income i have.
And if you're one of the few that have been following my ever so exciting life, 2010 started really bad for me; both mentally and physically. But then like a gust of wind everything changed.
J and i started having a social life. We took on the challenge of owning
So i sent out the quotation and every day i'd check my bank accounts online and each time a minuscule of Hope would flicker when i'd click the log in button.
"Please let the money be there," i'd say. But to my disappointment my account would scream less than one digit.
So sad.
Waiting for a client to pay the first deposit is like watching a plant grow. It can take so bloody long.
Then this morning, i did my usual bank balance ritual and lo and behold, the Money Gods heard my prayers... THANK YOU!
So as a pre-birthday treat to myself, i'm going to be all girly and spend the afternoon at the hairdressers. And i wonder, does "Uh oh" in English mean the same in German.
Let's hope i don't find out.

Uninvited double chins and Counting.
I'm not saying we're fat. We're just not that fit... anymore.
Neither one of us are very "sporty". Although J insists that in his younger years he was a lot more fit and craved the adrenalin. I, on the other hand, was forced to exercise or partake in sport because of school. Exercise was not my "thang," although i did attempt to join a gym and let's just say, that was a waste of money. I've tried out Kundilini Yoga and that was interesting, although back then i went with my colleagues and we were each others motivation.
But ever since J and i moved in together our waist lines have gained a few centimeters. And the dreadful double chins have been showing up uninvited.
My lack of exercise balanced with my obsession for carbs has caused my arse to gain an inch or two. Although J doesn't mind, my clothes beg to differ. And there's no way my clothes could have shrank that much in the wash.
Maybe it's a sign that i need to go shopping. I'm still wearing the same clothes that i bought nearly a decade ago.
Maybe it's Age catching up. Or maybe i can blame the "no-smoking" for my added attention towards junk food.
Yes i know, it's much easier to blame something else for something that i know am responsible for. I know i'm not that old. I probably just lack discipline.
But it's those fine little details that say as a 25 year old i wouldn't have noticed. Pressing forward 5 years and i'm seeing those faint lines embed themselves deeper. Scars aren't fading as fast. Skin is drying out and hair has lost it's sheen and turning a silvery white. I guess that's why wearing make-up is so wonderful, it covers blemishes yet it can also enhance areas all at the same time.
So let's see, in January we tried out Qi Gong.
Everything was going well but with J having to work a lot more now, his "free time" has been cut short. The place where we would do Qi Gong is about 25 minutes away by car and that adds up to close to an hour less sleep that he could have got and petrol wasted.
So a few weeks back, J called around looking for a yoga class which both of us could join.
And last night was our first trial class. It turned out that 2 people dropped out, so we were able to check it out. Recommended by another yoga teacher, J tried to convince me that it was a good idea.
"We need to do sports. We need to get fit," he would say.
I would follow with my excuses but eventually caved in and said, "Fine."
Turned out that J was the only male and that we were the youngest there. The average age i reckon would be at least in the late 40's or early 50's. Watching those aunties stretch and hold their poses, was quite impressive. But 75 Euros for 10 classes, sounds a bit steep for my liking.
We'll see.
Maybe when the weather warms up and for the snow pisses off, i'll buy J a bicycle and we can both ride around on the weekend. That's exercise!
But before all of that can happen, i'm hoping my client pays me before Friday!
*Prays extra hard to the Money Gods that the payment gets transferred by Thursday*
Because on Friday i have an appointment to get a new hairdo. Apparently the owner is the best hairdresser/stylist in this town. J's gone to 3 other hairdressers and they've all managed to fuck up his hair. Once i even had to bust out the scissors at home to make it even. So knowing that, i'm hesitant to get my hair trimmed.
Anyway, it's nearly impossible to get an appointment with this guy but i made mine 3 weeks ago and the only available slot is this Friday.
Yes, i'm going to spoil myself. Just in time for my birthday. 6 more days and counting!
And if i cancel, chances are i'll have to wait another few weeks for an open slot! I'm in desperate need for a trim since it's been over 6 months since my last hair cut and the ends are already past my waist. I'm thinking a new hair colour would add some spice to my coconut-sized skull of mine.
What say you?

Snow white and a Sunday lunch.
I was convinced that the Weatherman was lying when he said that last Friday would bring snow. If anything i thought there would be a few random flakes and they would just melt the second they touched the ground.
Geez was i wrong.
At around 6pm we saw the first few flakes appear and then they kept on falling throughout the night.
We woke up the next morning and everything was covered! According to the reports about 20 cm fell within a 12 hours period and because of the freak snow storm there were quite a number of accidents that night.
We spent most of Saturday indoors watching one movie after another and taking random naps in between. The weather wasn't looking too friendly anyway and sometime during the day there was another blizzard.
It only lasted about half an hour but it was enough to want to crawl back under the covers and forget the world.
Our fridge was practically empty and Hunger was calling, so we peeled ourselves off the sofa and made our way to the supermarket. On our way home, we stopped by the Irish Pub to have a beer and saw how much snow had fallen. The outdoor tables were covered in a thick layer of fresh snow, practically fused together into an icy block because it was so damn cold.
I thought Spring was just around the corner!
I reckon it was much colder than the minus 3˙C that the thermometer measured. The wind was so icy, i could feel it pierce through my layers and nibble away at my skin.
On Sunday the weather seemed perfect. The snow sparkled under the sun like diamonds. Everything looked so beautiful... behind closed doors and windows. But the temperature continued to hover around 0˙C [give or take a few degrees depending on whether you were standing in the shade or not].
We had invited J's mother for lunch, in fact our first visitor. She lives about an hour and a half away and so we figured since she never got around to visiting us in Düsseldorf, we thought we'd show her our new place.
I fried some spring rolls, chicken fillets, some kind of Turkey satay wanna-be. Alongside sugar peas with garlic and soya sauce, Fried Red + Yellow + Green Capsicums & Zucchini in a tomato based sauce and of course white rice.
Slightly nervous since that was the first time i cooked something for his mom, i hoped to all living things that the lunch was edible and tasted good.
She ended up having two helpings, so it couldn't have been that bad.
After our lunch we went to have coffee and cake in the city. The light snow during the night had frozen itself onto the windscreen and so we spent the first 10 minutes scraping the ice off. We were planning on taking a walk around the block but it was just too cold.
Before we knew it was time to say our farewells. Our weekend ended with a beautiful sunset and we were just thankful that everything went as planned.
The count down begins, 7 more days to go till i'm 30!

Caffeine and fur babies.
It's weather like this that tricks people to shed their layers. And one of the reasons why colds get passed around. Germs... everywhere are dirty germs! It's actually -3˙C and although the weatherman predicts that it'll climb up to 7˙C later this afternoon, i'd much rather catch the sun rays indoors.
I don't really have plans to step outside, although i probably should try and soak in some Vitamin D and get some exercise.
We'll see how my day goes.
But yesterday i went out. I even went by foot to the city because the weather was so nice. A solid 40 minute walk, i hear my buns of steel calling. I wore a scarf and fleece jacket and i was good to go. Yay, puffy-jacket-time during the day is nearly over!
I met up with a few of the ladies that i used to do the German course with and i have to say i had really good time. We laughed, shared stories and chit chatted about our kids/kittens - all in German of course. And i find my broken German is slowly improving.
I decided to take another road back home thinking it was shorter...
It wasn't and for some reason now my ankles hurt. I blame the ill-fitting boots i wore.
It ended up taking longer because i had to walk alongside a road that cut through some field. Yes, it's like a real life FarmVille except that i don't need to harvest any crops or groom any farm animals. Oh wait and i don't get presents or money.
OK it's not just like FarmVille.
It's only a field and they still have to remove the wilted crops. Plus it smells like manure mixed with mold caused by the melted snow.
Moving on...
My fur babies, they're growing up fast! We put together the second scratching post that we inherited from J's younger brother. So now my work room is the Playroom/Guestroom. And when they're not jumping in and out of the cardboard box that lies randomly in the centre of the room, they're chillin'.
But Yoshi remains to be a Mama's boy and follows me around most of the time.
He often drapes himself across my lap when he takes his morning/midday/afternoon/anytime nap and enjoys getting his belly rubbed. He can be such an attention seeker whore when he wants to be.
He has these dots on his stomach which makes him look like a leopard. I swear if he wasn't so cute i would wear him as a hat next winter. He's so soft!
As for Luna, well little Miss Independent spends most of the time doing her own thing. She's not as kissy-face as her brother but she does occasionally lie on my lap for a short snooze. She is usually the one initiating a round of "Catch Me If You Can" or "Peek-a-boo I See You" with Yoshi and is ALWAYS the first one at the feeding bowl when it's dinner time.
I can't imagine what it would be like if we only adopted one kitten. They spend a good portion of the day play fighting and exploring new heights before heading to their favorite spots to pass out. Which works out great for me because i can usually work at the computer for a good 2 hours before one of them distracts me and demands attention.
But last night we tuned into MTV and there were these guys doing stunts and for a good 15 minutes she sat there watching. Her human-like eyes grew bigger each time they flew from one side of the screen to the other. It was so cute to watch.
I have to admit though, having them in my life has made me feel so much better and having to work from home makes the day not so boring.
