"Schiff Ahoi, Captain!"

Believe it or not, J and i actually ventured out of our 65 square metre flat when it was still light yesterday. For the first time, in a very long time, the weather gods were kind. The temperature hovered just above 10˙C and there were no signs of rain clouds nearby. And with no real plan we jumped into the car and headed towards the Rhine [river]. Most of Germany does not function on a Sunday and practically everything is shut. But we figured we'd find a parking, walk along the Rhine and hope to have a coffee somewhere.

Eventually we stumbled upon Fischer's Kahn. A stationary little house boat that apparently was closed during Winter for events but had reopened to the public the day before. It looked cozy from the outside and since we could see there were quite a number of people in there, we figured we'd give it a go.

We started with coffee but then not long after the beers came and of course i couldn't say no to a Weizen. We ended up staying there till the sun went down and chatted about the future, life in general and watched people come in and go. It had been a while since J and i spent some quality time like that and i have to say it was really nice. It reminded me of the days last year when i'd travel by train for an hour from Bonn to Düsseldorf just to see him over the weekend.

But we noticed that the roof could be pulled aside and that allowed customers to smoke, which as a smoker, i think was a huge bonus since all restaurants are now smoke-free. And if one wants to smoke, they have to stand outside! But i guess since it wasn't really an enclosed eatery, there wouldn't be much of a problem with the law.

There was another boat up ahead and J was keen on having a cocktail and since we didn't really have anywhere important to go after, i thought why not. So on board we went.

But as J was ordering our cocktails, the waitress apologised and said they had no cocktails because they ran out of ice. Ran out of ice? Great. No cocktails - 1 minus point for them. But we had already made ourselves comfortable and i don't think either one of us wanted to go back yet or could be bothered to get up, so J ordered a vodka redbull minus the ice and i had another 0.5 litre Weizen beer.

As we sat inside we compared the 2 places and i concluded i much prefered the other place.

Not only because i figured they'd have ice but somehow felt more relaxed at the other place. Oh and another minus point for Canoo was they had drooping tulips. OK maybe i'm just picking faults but seriously, the tulips looked sad!

But even though Canoo is a "real" boat and had far more seating capacity, a fancy UV heating device in the ceiling and higher prices, i would definitely return to the other place for a nice meal and a few beers.

And i'm thinking when it gets warmer Fischer's Kahn would be lovely to go to. The waiter even passed his customers a business card so if we want to be guaranteed a table, all we have to do is call in advance. And what else i found cute was it's a dog-friendly venue. Customers can bring their dogs on board and they even provide bowls of water for them - how considerate.

But all in all, it was a great Sunday. It was a nice change to be outside and see what Düsseldorf had to offer.
